Changing Deeds

They did it! Now it's our turn!
John Allen Subdivision deeds have racially restrictive covenants
They are no longer enforceable, but they still appear on every deed to every lot in our neighborhood!
WE NEED TO CHANGE THAT!!!
Did you know that the deed of your home in the John Allen Subdivision (yes yours!) contains racially restrictive language?
It says: "No lot in said subdivision shall be occupied by persons not of the Caucasian race except as guests or servants domiciled with an owner or tenant."
We are a group of your neighbors who are working to eliminate the racially restrictive covenants from the home deeds in our area.
At least 2 other neighborhoods in Ann Arbor, that border ours, the Hannah Neighborhood and Wildwood Park Addition I, have removed the language from their deeds. It’s now our turn to take this small step towards equality in Ann Arbor.
Although this language is not enforceable, it is a legacy from a racist past and should not continue to be passed down through legal titles in our neighborhood.
This language is the equivalent of a “whites only” sign at the entrance to our neighborhood, and while symbolic, we believe that it is important to a culture of inclusivity to have this language struck from our legal deeds.
Help Us Change Our Deeds!
Two-thirds of the home-owners in the subdivision just need to agree to getting rid of that old racist language. Email us at WelcomingNeighborhood@gmail.com
The Deed Change Process is Simple
Sign an amendment that changes the deed for every property in the subdivision removing the restrictive language.
Have that amendment NOTARIZED. Angela Flood on the organizing committee is a notary and can notarize your document at no charge. You can also choose to go to your bank, your attorney or any other notary in the State of Michigan.
The organizing committee will turn in the paperwork to the County once we have 2/3 of our neighborhood in agreement.
